Ryan Aponte - Portraits and Cover-Ups

The Buffalo Tattoo Apprenticeship program is led by Ryan Aponte, founder of Energy Art and a Tattoo Artist known for portraits and cover-ups, two of the most demanding specialties in the trade.

Portrait work asks for patience and an exact eye. Getting a likeness right means handling expression, skin texture and the gradual shift from light to shadow, and Ryan has developed the precision to land those details.

Cover-ups call on a different strength: creative problem-solving. Ryan draws on color theory and smart design choices to turn an unwanted tattoo into a piece the client is glad to show off, which is why people seek him out for this work.

He opened Energy Art believing the space shapes the art, so the studio is calm, focused and fitted with top-quality tools. Apprentices absorb that standard from day one.

As a Mentor within the Ink Different network, Ryan provides apprentices with instruction in:

  • Portrait tattooing technique.
  • Cover-up planning, color theory and execution.
  • Custom design built around each client's ideas.
  • Studio workflow in a clean, modern shop.
  • Sanitation and safety standards.
  • Range across classic and contemporary styles.

5. Food With Local Pride:

Wings at Anchor Bar and beef on weck at Charlie the Butcher are part of daily life here, giving apprentices plenty of reasons to explore between sessions.
