Training at Moreira Ink

The Winter Haven Tattoo Apprenticeship program is hosted at Moreira Ink, an award-winning studio on E Alfred Dr founded by Puerto Rican-born Tattoo Artist Jorge L. Moreira.

Moreira Ink is a full team studio with one firm rule: every design is drawn fresh for the client. You will not find flash sheets or recycled templates on the walls here, and the energy inside reflects that creative drive.

The studio's work is built around:

  • Neo-traditional tattoos.
  • Anime and original character pieces.
  • Bold color tattoos.
  • Watercolor tattoos.
  • Fully custom designs.

For a Tattoo Apprentice, that custom-only standard is a demanding but valuable place to learn. You are pushed to develop your own drawing voice from day one, while seeing first-hand how an owner runs a busy team and a growing business.

Jorge L. Moreira - Founder of Moreira Ink

The Winter Haven Tattoo Apprenticeship program is led by Jorge L. Moreira, founder of Moreira Ink and an award-winning Tattoo Artist who was born and raised in Puerto Rico.

Jorge is known for pairing the strong outlines and structure of neo-traditional tattooing with saturated color and characters he invents himself. His portfolio ranges from menacing Joker designs to anime heroes, and each one starts as an original drawing rather than a copied reference.

He speaks both English and Spanish, which makes Moreira Ink a comfortable place for Spanish-speaking clients and apprentices. As the owner of a working studio with a full team, he also brings real business experience that many mentors cannot offer.

As a Mentor within the Ink Different network, Jorge provides apprentices with instruction in:

  • Neo-traditional structure and bold linework.
  • Color application, including watercolor techniques.
  • Designing custom pieces from first sketch to finished tattoo.
  • Character and anime design.
  • Client communication and studio standards.
  • Building and running a tattoo business.

Why Become a Tattoo Artist in Winter Haven?

1. A Custom-Only Studio:

At Moreira Ink every tattoo is drawn from scratch, so apprentices learn to design original work instead of tracing flash.

2. Bilingual Mentorship:

Jorge teaches and works in both English and Spanish, opening the door for Spanish-speaking apprentices and a wider client base.

3. A Clear Path to Licensing:

Florida licenses Tattoo Artists through county health departments and requires a bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases course, with no state-set apprenticeship hour count.

4. Steady Local Demand:

Residents, college students from Polk State College and nearby Lakeland campuses, and visitors drawn by LEGOLAND Florida keep demand for first tattoos and custom work strong.

5. Room to Grow Between Two Big Markets:

Winter Haven sits between Tampa and Orlando, so guest spots, conventions and industry connections are a short drive away without leaving Polk County.

Explore the Tattoo Culture in Winter Haven

Original, Custom-Driven Work

Polk County's tattoo community is growing quickly, and clients here increasingly ask for one-of-a-kind pieces. Studios like Moreira Ink have built their reputation on original designs, and apprentices who train in that environment learn to meet that demand.

Neo-Traditional and Character Tattooing

Bold neo-traditional work and pop-culture character pieces have a strong following in Central Florida. Learning these styles from an award-winning artist gives you skills that local clients actively look for.

Conventions Within Reach

With Tampa and Orlando both within driving distance, Winter Haven apprentices can attend regional tattoo events, meet other artists and pick up guest spots while keeping a home base in Polk County.

Winter Haven offers a close-knit, fast-growing tattoo scene where original work stands out.

Winter Haven's Art and Cultural Scene

Winter Haven and the surrounding Polk County towns offer plenty of creative fuel for a working artist. Here are some standout features:

  • Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art: This Lakeland museum presents rotating exhibitions and a permanent collection that make it a strong source of visual ideas for apprentices.

  • Bok Tower Gardens: A historic singing tower and landscaped gardens in nearby Lake Wales, ideal for sketching botanicals and architectural detail.

  • Florida Southern College: The Lakeland campus holds the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world, open to visitors.

  • Theatre Winter Haven: The city's long-running community theater stages plays and musicals throughout the year.

  • LEGOLAND Florida Resort: Built on the grounds of the former Cypress Gardens, the park keeps a steady flow of visitors moving through Winter Haven.

From museums and gardens to lakeside downtown life, Winter Haven gives apprentices a creative backdrop well beyond the studio.
