Who is @iHeartInk_?
Some Tattoo Artists find the craft after years of searching. Ellis, known online as @iHeartInk_, found it early and never let go. He is more than a maker of tattoos: he is a storyteller, and his work carries a narrative as rich and layered as the ink he lays into skin. His journey is now part of the Ink Different Tattoo Studio family in Chicago, and it is a clear example of what a life built around Tattoo Artistry can look like.

How did his passion for art and tattoos begin?
From the age of 8 or 9, Ellis found joy in drawing on church flyers during services. Through school his fascination with art and history grew, and both became subjects where he excelled. Despite a surprising talent for math, he poured his creative energy into painting murals for his high school. During his senior year he went deep on the subject, writing a 20-page paper on the 3,000-year history of tattooing across cultures. With 17 tattoos already on his own skin, his passion was undeniable. Around 16, he met a skilled Tattoo Artist named Tuckan, who brought his drawings to life and planted the idea that tattooing could be his own path.
Why did he choose tattooing over the NFL?
After high school, a football scholarship carried Ellis to the University of St Francis along with dreams of NFL glory. Then fate intervened. During his freshman year a roommate suggested he try Tattoo Artistry, and over the winter break he armed himself with an eBay tattoo kit and set up a makeshift shop in his basement to practice. Word spread fast on campus. He began tattooing friends and teammates, and it was not unusual for 15 to 20 people to crowd into his tiny dorm room to watch and wait their turn.
A thumb injury, first mistaken for a torn ligament and later traced to football, only deepened his commitment to the craft. As the pull of tattooing grew stronger, the distant NFL dream began to fade. The clarity came: tattooing was his true calling. That decision turned a dorm-room hobby into a life’s vocation. Thirteen years later, the energy and challenges of those early days still shape the artist he has become.
Tip: You do not need a specific degree or background to become a Tattoo Artist. What you need is genuine passion for the craft, a willingness to practice relentlessly, and proper guidance from an experienced Mentor.

How does a tattoo apprenticeship build a career like this?
Talent gets you started, but a structured apprenticeship is what turns raw passion into a professional, job-ready Tattoo Artist. At Ink Different, the apprenticeship pairs you with a Mentor and blends theory with hands-on practice so you build both technical skill and a distinct artistic identity. Here is how the journey typically unfolds.

Master hygiene and safety
complete a Bloodborne Pathogens course and Hepatitis B vaccination so you meet the standards a licensed studio requires.
Build your portfolio

Work toward licensing
with mentorship and licensing support, move toward practising as a professional in a licensed environment.
To begin an Ink Different apprenticeship you must be 18 or older, complete a Bloodborne Pathogens course, and have the Hepatitis B vaccination. The program is built to take a beginner from enthusiast to skilled professional over time, with the confidence to leave a real mark in the industry.
Note: Seats in the apprenticeship are limited, since mentorship is one-to-one and hands-on. That focus is exactly what makes the training work.
